The European Accessibility Act (EAA)

Das Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG)

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is a German law that will come into effect on June 28, 2025. It implements the EU directive and its goal is to ensure equal access to digital products and services for people with disabilities.

What does the EAA regulate?

The law requires companies to ensure that websites and online shops are accessible.

Accessibility means that content and functions must be independently usable and understandable for everyone — for example, through the use of ALT texts, keyboard navigation or plain language.

Who is affected?

The law primarily applies to providers of digital services and e-commerce businesses with more than 10 employees or an annual turnover exceeding 2 million euros.

What this means for companies:

Those who take action early not only improve usability and reach a wider audience, but also protect themselves from potential penalties or restrictions for non-compliance.
